Mars colonization captures imaginations but faces enormous technical challenges. Should we focus on lunar development, asteroid mining, or space manufacturing instead?

Additional Context

Mars missions require perfect execution of dozens of untested technologies with no backup plans. Meanwhile, lunar development and asteroid mining could provide economic returns that fund future Mars missions. Are we putting the cart before the horse?

Mars colonization is important as an inspirational goal but terrible as a near-term strategy. The technical challenges are so enormous that attempting Mars missions with current technology will likely result in catastrophic failures that set back space exploration for decades. Lunar development provides 80% of the technical challenges with 20% of the risk.

Mars colonization goal could be a clever way to get funding from Nasa for revenue generating private work of Starlink.
